1910 – The Beginning…

Work begins to design an infant formula based on cows' milk but formulated to be as close as possible to breast milk.

1918 – Clinical trials…

Clinical trials begin on SMA* (Synthetic Milk Adaptation) formula.

1919 – SMA is born…

The company we now know as SMA Nutrition* is formed and a manufacturing plant is constructed in Michigan, USA.

1921 – Setting the standard…

SMA is the first infant formula to be readily available in the USA.

1933 – Improving the formula…

Beta Carotene is added to SMA formulae.

1943 – SMA and Wyeth unite…

SMA is purchased by American Home Products Corporation and later integrated with Wyeth Laboratories.

1947 – Fortified vitamin D…

SMA formula is fortified with additional amounts of vitamin D.

1956 – SMA reaches the UK…

SMA formula is introduced to the United Kingdom.

1961 – Technical breakthrough…

Wyeth Laboratories make a technical breakthrough which enables infant formula to have the same 60:40, whey to casein ratio as breast milk.

1969 – Ready-to-feed milk…

SMA Nutrition introduce the first ready-to-feed milk to UK maternity units.

1974 – Introducing Gold…

SMA Gold* is the first whey dominant infant formula to be introduced to the UK.

1980 – Introducing SMA Wysoy…

SMA Nutrition launch SMA Wysoy*, a soya protein based infant formula suitable for babies with allergy to cows' milk protein or lactose intolerance.

1981 – Introducing Low birthweight…

SMA Nutrition introduce a formula for low birthweight babies.

1984 – Follow-on milk…

SMA Nutrition introduce SMA Progress* follow-on milk.

1987 – Convenient cartons…

SMA Gold and SMA White* are the first infant formulae available outside maternity units in convenient ready-to-feed cartons.

1995 – Feeding on demand…

SMA Progress is launched in a ready-to-feed format.

1996 – Nucleotides introduced…

Nucleotides are introduced to SMA Gold and SMA White in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

1996 – Low Birthweight…

Long Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (LCPs) are introduced to SMA Low Birthweight Formula.

1997 – Faltering growth…

SMA High Energy* is launched to meet the needs of infants and young children who have been diagnosed with faltering growth.

1997 – Lactose intolerant…

SMA LF* is launched as a Food for Special Medical Purposes for babies who are lactose intolerant.

2001 – Improving SMA Gold…

SMA introduce LCP’s into SMA Gold. 

2003 – SMA Staydown…

SMA Staydown* is launched for babies who bring back their feeds

2006 – SMA Gold Prem…

SMA Low Birthweight* reformulated and relaunched as SMA Gold Prem*

2007 – Major advances...

SMA Nutrition continue to make major advances in infant formula, and have reformulated SMA Gold to be the only infant formula with a new improved protein profile.
