Protein

Proven protein:energy ratio for catch-up growth

An individual’s protein requirement is calculated based on the amount needed for maintenance and growth.  Protein is also needed for functional outcomes such as immunity, repair of body tissue and metabolism.

At 8.8%, the protein:energy ratio of SMA High Energy is  close to that recommended for catch-up growth (9%).1

Excess protein has not been shown to have any benefits. Indeed, it often has the opposite effect, being associated with a range of short-term and long-term adverse effects including a high renal and hepatic solute load.2

The protein:energy ratio in SMA High Energy is well tolerated  and has been proven to promote catch-up growth.3

A balanced protein:energy ratio
SMA High Energy 8.8%
Recommended minimum for catch-up growth 9.0%1

Nucleotides

Proven to promote catch-up growth

The nucleotides included in SMA High Energy have been shown to promote beneficial changes in length, weight and head circumference.4

Nucleotides are also important for a healthy gut. They promote the growth of ‘good’ bacteria in the gastrointestinal system, and the development of healthy gastrointestinal cells, and are also involved in the development of the immune system5,6.

Found in all living cells of the body, nucleotides are essential for correct cellular function. They are often described as the building blocks of life.

Making nucleotides in the body is an energy-intense process; supplying them in the diet means that valuable energy can be directed towards:

  • improved catch-up growth4
  • improved weight gain4
  • immune system benefits5,6

Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (LCPs)

Important for healthy brain, nervous system and vision development

SMA High Energy is the only high-energy infant formula to contain the LCPs Arachidonic Acid (AA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) at levels recommended by the Munich Workshop. This Workshop linked their addition to infant formula with improvements in visual function and development.7

SMA High Energy is the only nutrient-dense formula suitable for vegetarians. Unlike others, it has added LCPs obtained from pure vegetable sources.

Both AA and DHA are naturally present in breast milk.

Click here for more general info on LCPs.

Fats

Blend ensures optimal mineral absorption and good energy supply

The fat blend in SMA High Energy ensures optimal energy supply and absorption of minerals, such as calcium for strong bones.

The essential fatty acid ratio of linoleic to alpha- linolenic acid is 10.8:1 in SMA High Energy. This is in the mid range of breast milk which is between 5.1 and 15.1.

Carbohydrates

100% lactose, a key energy source

The carbohydrate content of SMA High Energy is, like breast milk,100% lactose.

Lactose comprises of two sugars, glucose and galactose, joined together and is unique to milk as it does not occur naturally elsewhere in nature.

As well as providing a key energy source, lactose aids the absorption of calcium.

Antioxidants

Protecting infants as they grow

SMA High Energy also contains antioxidants, including selenium, to help protect against cell damage from free radicals.

Selenium plays an important role in helping maintain the immune system by scavenging for free radicals.

Iron and Vitamin C

Iron is important for brain functioning and development.8

SMA High Energy has a higher iron content compared with other nutrient dense feeds.

From 4–6 months, an infant’s natural iron stores begin to deplete. A good supply of iron needs to come from dietary sources.

Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron from food. It is also one of the antioxidant vitamins – it helps protect cells from free radical damage.

On average, weight for weight, young children need 3 times more iron and 4.5 times more vitamin C than adults relative to their size.9

Complete Vitamin and Mineral Profile

Like all the SMA formula milks, SMA High Energy contains a broad profile of macro and micronutrients, including key vitamins and minerals.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  Breast milk is best for babies.   This product must be used under medical supervision. SMA High Energy is a milk based formula for the dietary management of infants and young children with medically determined high energy requirements as identified by a doctor or dietitian. It is suitable for use for infants and young children up to eighteen months of age, either as the sole source of nutrition or in conjunction with solid foods as advised by a doctor or dietitian.  Professional advice must be followed on the need for, and proper use of formulae and on all matters of infant feeding.  SMA High Energy is not intended for use with newborn premature babies, for whom fortified breast milk or a low birthweight formula is more appropriate.  However, SMA High Energy may be used, under medical supervision, after these babies are discharged from hospital.
