What is SMA High Energy*?

SMA High Energy is a food for special medical purposes suitable for infants and young children who have been diagnosed with faltering growth.

It is a nutritionally complete, nutrient-dense formula milk, suitable for term infants and young children from birth to 18 months of age with medically identified increased energy and nutrient requirements. It can be used either as a sole source of nutrition (calculated according to individuals needs) or mixed with foods.

Clinically proven for faltering growth

As well as being clinically proven to promote weight gain and growth, SMA High Energy is well tolerated.1

Beneficial for infants with organic or non-organic faltering growth

If faltering growth is due to a medical condition, SMA High Energy will:

  • Provide the nutritional support necessary for infants with chronic illness
  • Help to stabilize weight loss during assessment/treatment
  • Provide the calories and protein necessary for catch-up growth

When faltering growth is caused by a feeding problem, SMA High Energy will:

  • Allow weight gain while feeding routines are re-established
  • Help reassure parents and reduce stress
  • Help to prevent long-term irreversible effects of under-nutrition, if intervention starts early

SMA High Energy

  • A protein:energy ratio close to that recommended for catch-up growth – 8.8%2
  • More iron than other nutrient-dense feeds3
  • Contains balance of nutrients found in breastmilk – LCPs, nucleotides, beta-carotene, selenium
  • Suitable for enteral tube feeding
  • Can be used as a sole source of nutrition (calculated according to the individual infant’s needs)
  • Can complement a weaning diet as advised by a doctor or dietitian
  • Easy to incorporate into the diet, as a drink or in recipes
  • Low renal solute load, gentle on immature kidneys
  • Only nutrient-dense formula suitable for vegetarians

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  Breast milk is best for babies.   This product must be used under medical supervision. SMA High Energy is a milk based formula for the dietary management of infants and young children with medically determined high energy requirements as identified by a doctor or dietitian. It is suitable for use for infants and young children up to eighteen months of age, either as the sole source of nutrition or in conjunction with solid foods as advised by a doctor or dietitian.  Professional advice must be followed on the need for, and proper use of formulae and on all matters of infant feeding.  SMA High Energy is not intended for use with newborn premature babies, for whom fortified breast milk or a low birthweight formula is more appropriate.  However, SMA High Energy may be used, under medical supervision, after these babies are discharged from hospital.
