Key Nutrients :

SMA Progress Can

All the right nutrients in the right amounts

SMA Progress* is specially formulated to contain the extra iron, vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients that children need between 6 months and 2 years of age, as they get used to family foods.

Proportional to their body weight, toddlers need a lot more calories, protein, zinc and calcium than adults. They also need 3 times more iron and 4.5 times more vitamin C, - relative to their size1  – but they are unable to eat ‘adult’ amounts of food.

SMA Progress contains the important nutrients for older babies and toddlers, packed in to a smaller volume of milk compared with standard formula milks. Full details of its nutritional composition are available click here.

  • Iron
  • Vitamin C

Iron and Vitamin C

Iron is important for brain functioning and development.2

Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron from food. It is also one of the antioxidant vitamins – it helps protect cells from free radical damage.

From 4–6 months an infant’s natural iron stores begin to deplete. A good supply of iron needs to come from dietary sources.

On average young children need 3 times more iron and 4.5 times more vitamin C than adults relative to their size.1

SMA Progress contains an optimum balance of iron and vitamin C to ensure good iron absorption.3

DID YOU KNOW ?

Progress* contains 40 times more iron than cows’ milk.4

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for adequate bone mineralization by regulating the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body.

Sunlight is an important source of vitamin D for adults. However, the UK government recommends that babies and young children should be kept completely out of the sun or covered up with sunscreen because of concerns about skin cancer. Unfortunately, this means that the synthesis of the vitamin by this route may be minimal.

SMA Progress contains higher levels of vitamin D than infant formula or cows’ milk.4

Zinc

Zinc is important for growth, muscle and tissue development, the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, and for a healthy immune system. Many of the body's hormones and enzymes also depend on zinc to perform their functions.

Approximately three out of four toddlers between 18 and 30 months old have a daily zinc intake below the recommended level.5

However, SMA Progress contains higher levels of zinc compared to 1st infant milks and cows' milk to suit the weaning child’s nutritional needs.

Vitamin A

The antioxidant vitamin A helps to support the immune system and fight infection6,7 It is also important for eye, skin and body tissue health and development, and helps with recovery after illness.7

Calcium

Babies and toddlers need sufficient levels of calcium in their diets. Calcium is not only essential for proper bone and teeth development, it also plays a role in regulating muscle contraction.

SMA Progress contains 90mg of calcium per 100ml, approximately twice as much as first infant milks to meet an infant and toddlers growing needs.

Carbohydrates

100% lactose, a key energy source

The carbohydrate content of SMA Progress is 100% lactose.

Lactose comprises of two sugars, glucose and galactose, joined together and is unique to milk as it does not occur naturally elsewhere in nature.

As well as providing a key energy source, lactose also aids the absorption of minerals such as calcium.

Nucleotides

Helping to build an infant’s immunity

Without the right nutrients to help develop the immune system, infants may become susceptible to infection.

For this reason, SMA Progress contains nucleotides– to help develop the immune system.8,9

Nucleotides are also important for a healthy gut. They promote the growth of ‘good’ bacteria in the gastrointestinal system, and the development of healthy gastrointestinal cells.
Found in all living cells of the body, nucleotides are essential for correct cellular function. They are often described as the building blocks of life.

Antioxidants

SMA Progress contains several antioxidants, including vitamin C and selenium, to help protect against cell damage from free radicals

Selenium plays an important role in helping maintain the immune system by scavenging for free radicals.

Complete Vitamin and Mineral Profile

Like all the SMA formula milks, SMA Progress contains a broad profile of macro and micronutrients, including key vitamins and minerals.
