What is SMA Staydown*?

SMA Staydown is a nutritionally complete infant formula for the treatment of significant reflux.  It is suitable to use from birth up until one year of age.

It has been thickened with an easily digestible pre-cooked corn starch that thickens on contact with stomach acid.

This allows the feed to flow smoothly through a normal teat, aiding easy feeding.

Clinically proven to reduce regurgitation

A number of studies have shown that the use of a thickened formula with pre-cooked corn starch is useful for managing regurgitation in formula fed infants.1-3

Advice for parents – making up SMA Staydown

Unlike standard infant formula, SMA Staydown requires to be made up in a slightly different way.
Parents should be advised that:

  • In addition to washing hands well, and sterilising all feeding equipment according to manufacturers instructions, when making up SMA Staydown, the powder should be mixed with  previously boiled and refrigerated water.
  • When mixing the powder and water together, roll the bottle vigorously  between your hands – do not shake.
  • Prepare each feed individually as required, by adding the correct number of scoops of SMA Staydown to the refrigerated water in the bottle.

The bottle can be brought up to room temperature before feeding by placing in a bowl of tepid water.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  Breast feeding is best for babies.  Pre-thickened infant formulae are intended to replace breast milk when mothers do not breast feed and when significant reflux (regurgitation) is a problem.  Good maternal nutrition is important for preparation and maintenance of breast feeding. Introducing partial bottle feeding may have a negative effect on breast feeding and reversing a decision not to breast feed is difficult.   You should always seek the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist on the need for and proper method of use of infant milks and on all matters of infant feeding.  Infant milk should always be prepared and used as directed.  Unnecessary or improper use of infant formula may present a health hazard.  Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of infant feeding.  If the baby's reflux does not improve within 2 weeks of starting use of a pre-thickened infant formula, or if the infant fails to thrive, the family doctor should be consulted.
