When should SMA High Energy be used?
SMA High Energy is a food for special medical purposes and must be used under medical supervision.
Beneficial for infants with organic or non-organic faltering growth
If faltering growth is due to a medical condition, SMA High Energy will:
- Provide the nutritional support necessary for infants with chronic illness
- Help to stabilize weight loss during assessment/treatment
- Provide the calories and protein necessary for catch-up growth
When faltering growth is caused by a feeding problem, SMA High Energy will:
- Allow weight gain while feeding routines are re-established
- Help reassure parents and reduce stress
- Help to prevent long-term irreversible effects of under-nutrition, if intervention starts early
What is faltering growth?
Faltering growth is defined as either:
- Weight loss more than 10% of birthweight
- Failure to regain birthweight by day 14
- Persistent low weight gain for more than 2 months
- Downward weight velocity trend where the weight crosses 2 or more centiles.
