Breastfeeding tips for mums

Practical advice to share with your mums

  • Since feeds can take anything from a few minutes up to 40 minutes, picking a comfortable place for breastfeeding is very important. A reminder of breastfeeding positions
  • Remind them to always have a glass of water beside them before they start breastfeeding.
  • See our breastfeeding helpsheet for advice on latching-on
  • Recommend they wear a supportive, front opening bra with breast pads. For discreet feeding, suggest stretchy tops and scarves
  • To help them avoid getting sore nipples, demonstrate how they can break the suction by sliding their little finger into the side of their baby’s mouth before taking them away from their breast
  • Breastfeeding can be quite tiring so when the baby falls asleep, encourage mum to take a nap too
  • Remind them of the importance of always returning their baby to the Moses basket or cot after a night-time feed
  • Remind them that this is not the time to go on a diet - if they’re worried about their weight, take the time to discuss it with them
  • Remind them not to skip meals – it’ll make them more hungry, tired and grumpy
