Breastfeeding support

Useful numbers and websites for mums to contact for help and confidential advice on breastfeeding

Helpful organisations

If mums have any questions or worries about breastfeeding, encourage them to speak to you about it and if necessary, refer them on to one of the following organisations.

National Childbirth Trust (NCT)
Telephone: 0300 330 0771
www.nct.org.uk
www.cuidiu-ict.ie
Lines are open from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week. They’ll be put through to a qualified breastfeeding counsellor for information and support.

La Leche League
24-hour helpline: 0845 120 2918
www.laleche.org.uk
www.lalecheleagueireland.com
Calls are answered by mums, answering the phone in their own home (so try to keep calls in sociable hours). They have the most up-to-date breastfeeding information available and can share a wealth of experience from other breastfeeding mums.

The Breastfeeding Network
Telephone: 0844 412 4664
www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk
www.breastfeeding.ie
Lines are open from 9.30am to 9.30pm everyday. They will be automatically connected to their local BfN Registered Breastfeeding Supporter, all of whom have breastfed their own babies and receive ongoing training and support.

Association of Breastfeeding Mothers (ABM)
Telephone: 0844 4122 949
www.abm.me.uk
Lines are open from 9.30am to 10.30pm everyday. All breastfeeding counsellors are volunteers who have breastfed their own children and have also received in-depth training on all aspects of breastfeeding.

Many new mums fail to breastfeed because they don’t ask for help or get support. Remind them that they shouldn’t be afraid to ask, and they can speak to whoever they like for help and advice; their midwife, a breastfeeding support group, or even another breastfeeding mum.
