Infant case studies

An infant with cows’ milk allergy

Clare is a 2-month-old baby – following a presentation with atopic dermatitis she was diagnosed with cows’ milk allergy. Clare was exclusively breastfed until 2 months of age, after which cows’ milk formula was introduced.

Case study of a preterm infant

Jemima is a 32-week preterm baby born to a first-time mother with pre-eclampsia. Mum is unable to express, so Jemima is formula-fed. Formula is well tolerated and she grows well. Breastfeeding is re-initiated before Jemima is discharged without complications.

This case study guides you through consideration of the key risks for a preterm infant like Jemima, and appropriate risk management strategies at each stage of her care. It also discusses the role of breastfeeding in preterm infants and ways of supporting mothers of preterm infants to express breast milk.
