SMA LF® Lactose Free Formula

SMA LF{®} Lactose Free Formula

For the dietary management of primary and secondary lactose intolerance in infants and young children – suitable from birth onwards. This formula should be used under medical supervision.

The first 1000 days of a baby’s life have a life-long impact on many aspects of future health.

SMA LF is a lactose-free formula which is recommended for use in diagnosed cases of primary lactose intolerance and transient lactose intolerance. Gastroenteritis is a common cause of transient lactose intolerance – it can take 6–8 weeks to restore a baby’s ability to digest lactose after an episode of gastroenteritis.1 Avoiding lactose during this time may help to avoid further lactose malabsorption and thus shorten the duration of acute diarrhoea.2 Symptoms of lactose intolerance include abdominal pain and wind, loose stools and diarrhoea, all of which can cause distress to baby and parents.

SMA LF is the only lactose-free formula that contains whey-dominant protein, as recommended by the UK Department of Health.3

SMA LF is Halal approved and suitable for vegetarians.

SMA LF has been designed specifically for the dietary management of infants and young children who are intolerant to lactose or sucrose, or who are suffering from symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain or wind that could be caused by temporary lactose intolerance. It is suitable as the sole source of nutrition for infants from birth in place of a usual formula feed. For older babies, it can be used as part of a mixed diet. It is suitable for use up to 18 months of age and may be used for children and adults with lactose intolerance as part of a lactose-free diet.

SMA LF is not for those who are allergic to cows’ milk protein or who suffer from galactosaemia or require a galactose-free diet. It is suitable for the dietary management of primary and secondary lactose intolerance.

For enteral use only.

Halal-approved and Vegetarian Society-approved. Can be mixed with food for weaning babies.

Information for you to give to mums

Preparing your baby’s feed

Whilst SMA® Nutrition powdered products are made under strict hygienic conditions, they are not sterile. Failure to follow instructions on preparation and storage may make your baby ill.

1. Wash hands well. Sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers’ instructions.

2. Boil 1 litre of fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool for no more than 30 minutes. Measure the required amount of water (see feeding guide) into a sterilised bottle, carefully – the water is hot. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.

3. Using the scoop provided, add the correct number of scoops of powder (see feeding guide), levelling off each scoop with the back of a clean dry knife. Replace plastic lid on can.

4. Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and shake well. Cool bottle under cold running water or in a bowl or jug of cool water until lukewarm. Test temperature by shaking a few drops on to the inside of your wrist.
