Human Milk Oligosaccharides – what they are and why they are important, with a focus on preterm infants

Dr. Boutaina Zemrani is a paediatrician with expertise in paediatric nutrition, bringing over 15 years of clinical experience from university hospitals across Europe, Africa, and Australia.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are complex carbohydrates that represent the third most abundant solid component in human milk. Growing evidence suggests that HMOs confer key benefits in early life, however preterm infants may have reduced HMO exposure due to factors like early birth, lactation stage, caesarean delivery, and donor milk use. Pre-clinical evidence shows that HMOs provide key benefits and more recent lines of evidence provide key insights into the safety, tolerance, and potential role of HMOs in preterm infants.

This live and interactive webinar will discuss these topics, cover the research supporting the role of HMOs with a focus on preterm infants, and give you an opportunity to hear from leading researcher, Dr. Boutaina Zemrani who will:

  • Discuss the science and functional benefits of Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs)
  • And their importance in preterm infants.

This 1-hour session will include an interactive Q&A with the speaker.
