DEVELOPMENT

Iron to help support normal cognitive development in a young child’s brain.

We have made improvements to the nutritional composition of SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk powder formulation which now has the highest level of Omega 3 DHA* in the UK with a 4 x increase** in our new recipe. Omega 3 & 6† and iodine helps support normal growth.

We have also changed the source of our Omega 3 to fish oils in SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk powders to align with our ready-to-feed products.

SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk is enriched with iron to help support normal cognitive development and omega 3 LCP* to support eye and brain development.1

As a percentage of young children’s daily requirements, 2 x 200 ml servings of SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk provides 68% of their daily vitamin D.2

The first 1,000 days of a baby’s life have a life-long impact on many aspects of future health.

As babies progress into toddlerhood, they continue to require a balanced mix of nutrients to support appropriate growth.

Excessive protein intake in infancy and early childhood is linked with later overweight and obesity; research shows the importance of providing the right amount of protein in the diet to help support appropriate growth.3,4

SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk has a protein level of 1.3 g/100 ml.

Research shows the importance of providing the right amount of protein in the diet to help support appropriate growth.3,4

Evidence shows that young children who consumed growing up milks (compared with those whose main milk was cows’ milk) had a higher mean intake of vitamin D and iron, and a lower more appropriate intake of protein.5

Use of a Growing Up Milk can help to decrease the intake of protein in the diet, compared to a diet that includes unfortified cow's milk.6

A fortified milk with vitamin D, calcium, iron and iodine

The latest infant dietary survey shows that in the UK, 31% of young children aged 12–35 months do not meet the estimated average requirement for iron, while 91% of this age group do not meet the estimated average requirement for dietary vitamin D.

The National Pre-School Nutrition Survey in Ireland reported that 23% of 1-year-olds and about 10% of 2- and 3-year-olds had inadequate intake of iron. Intake of vitamin D was generally low indicating that a significant proportion of children may be at risk of inadequate intake of vitamin D, particularly in winter.7

Between 6 and 24 months, young children have a high requirement for iron due to rapid growth and nervous system development. Iron deficiency can lead to reduced cognitive function8 and vitamin D deficiency can result in rickets.9

A Growing Up Milk, such as SMA PRO Growing Up Milk, can help to increase the intake of iron, vitamin D, and omega 3 LCP.

Omega 3 and 6

Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids support normal development and growth*. Omega 3, α-linolenic acid, and omega 6, linoleic acid, are essential fatty acids because they cannot be synthesised in the body, therefore they need to be obtained through the diet.

SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk also contains Omega 3 LCP (DHA). This is to help ensure that young children aren’t missing out on this important nutrient. Although LCPs can be made in the body, infants and young children have a high demand for these nutrients and can benefit from an additional source.1
