On 17 November we recognize World Prematurity Day. We want to take this opportunity to thank all the healthcare professionals who care for premature babies. Thanks to your commitment, these babies are given a fighting chance from the very beginning. We truly acknowledge your impact. Thank you!
Worldwide, more than 1 in 10 infants are born prematurely every year, resulting in an estimated 13 million preterm births per year. Prematurity affects both developed and developing countries, with higher rates observed in the latter.
All newborns are vulnerable, but preterm babies are especially so. They can be born with a birth weight even below 1000g (defined as extremely low birth weight babies). Many of them require special care simply to remain alive. Prematurity is the world’s single biggest cause of newborn death, and the second leading cause of all child deaths, after pneumonia. Many of the preterm babies who survive could face long term physical and neurodevelopmental disabilities. Behind every preterm baby there is a unique story. As the global leader in preterm nutrition research, Nestlé is committed to supporting these very fragile babies by providing support to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) through equipping HCPs with educational programs and providing products specially designed for these little heroes.
On World Prematurity Day (WPD), remembered on the 17th November every year, we want to share our commitment to supporting preterm babies and their parents, as well as healthcare providers.
